telnet and ssh work nice with portforward, but you have to telnet to some defined port descried at http://www.polarhome.com/service/shell/ports.html

Example:
Telnet to OpenBSD: telnet gate.polarhome.com 732 ssh to OpenVMS: ssh gate.polarhome.com -p 705
Please note, that if you are already on some polarhome.com inside server you may use simple: telnet openbsd or ssh username@vax
