What happened to the ia64 servers?

Postby jovan_raspberrypi » Wed Aug 17, 2016 11:26 pm

I'm sad because it seems like all the ia64 public servers are going extinct. First Deathrow, and now Polarhome? I was getting ready to try to learn OpenVMS ia64 assembly again. What happened? Electric bill too high?

I don't have an account on ia64, but I can get to the telnet log-in screen so it must be up and running.

Are you trying the right port? From outside Polarhome, access ia64 at:

Telnet: gate.polarhome.com 982
SSH: gate.polarhome.com 985

From inside Polarhome, just connect to "ia64".

Alpha and VAX are also available if you want to use OpenVMS.

Hi,

no it not the electric bill that stops these servers but the heat in the server room.
IA64 servers are very sensitive and simply shut down when it is too warm.
Therefore the polarhome IA64 servers are every summer down...

I made a try some other night. Both hpux-ia64 and the openvms ia64 server were running few hours.
I updated the vms licences but they shut down shortly after that.

I would say very soon, when the autumn comes to Stockholm... the server will be up and running some 6 months.

I am sorry... but I do not have proper air condition in my storage room that is polarhome's server room.
Regards,
Z

In Sweden, can't you just put the servers in a shady spot out-of-doors to keep them cool all year round? ;)
