Polarhome Shutting Down?

Postby papa » Sat Jan 08, 2022 3:33 am

I read on the bulletin board at SDF that Zoli has decided to shut down Polarhome! Is this true?

The reasons given were lack of use and power costs, which are certainly understandable. Nevertheless, it will be sad to see Polarhome go.

The Polarhome servers have been a great, if underutilized, resource. ALPHA was my teacher for the wonderful VMS operating system! I appreciate the time, effort, and money Zoli has put into keeping them running up to now.

I have backed up and downloaded files from my accounts on Debian, NetBSD, and Redhat. If possible, I hope that ALPHA can be put on-line one more time before the end so I can make sure I have copies of all my latest work there.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

UPDATE: I just found the NEWS post at the top of the polarhome.com home page. I guess it's true. :(

It has been a pleasure for so many years.

A huge thank you to Zoli, and everyone else for making our little paths cross.

Take care.

sjaz.

Just seen my forum account is almost 19 years old... Old enough to drink in the UK.

The polarhome will not be shut down 100%...
The official announcement and the status is more to set the public expectations.

I would not bet against a resurrection from the ashes phenomena :)

Polarhome will always hold a dear place in my heart.

I learnt my first Linux commands here. I hosted by first website, which eventually became a bit too much for what Polarhome could provide. I met DennisF and we started a business hosting free phpBB forums. In the end, designing websites became a career choice for me.

Lovely years! Internet was certainly a much nicer placer then!
