Question about home directories

Postby artifactone » Sat Jul 08, 2006 6:25 am

Hello.

I'm considering signing up to Polarhome in order to compile
and test my public domain software on as wide a range of
operating systems as possible. My question is: are home
directories shared across systems, perhaps by NFS? I would
like to be able to automate compilation and testing
somewhat by logging into each machine sequentially via
a script and it'd be nice to not have to have a copy of
the source code on each machine (any fixes will require
a re-test across all architectures and if home directories
aren't shared, that requires distributing updates to
each machine).

I'm Looking forward to trying IRIX again after all these
years!

thanks a lot,
mc

hi,

sorry, but the boxes do not share home directories.
The main reason for doing this is that (even if has happened) but it is unlikely that that same user owns the same username across the polarhome realm.

If it is a genuine OS project, you can use sf.net and their Compile Farm which has some hardware/os/arch shared via NFS. Not as good a range as Polarhome though..

... actually, it would not be that complicate to create system wide accounts and share them via nfs, but the problem is that lot of users would ask for system wide accounts without reson - (ab)using valuable resources.

I'll add this to TODO list - very good idea, but we need to sleep on it :)

Perhaps this is something we can have via application? IE, provision of a decent reason, perhaps some kind of example usage etc? I can see a definite use for it!
