East Timor - Jose Ramos-Horta with Fretilin and supporters
Jose Ramos-Horta jokes with and encourages Fretilin freedom fighters at the remote village of Batugade in western East Timor very close to the border with Indonesia. We watched the Indonesian troops washing in the river at dawn only one kilometer away and we found their cigarette butts only 100 meters from the shack we slept in on October 4th 1975 . 2 weeks later this village was taken by the Indonesians and 5 western journalists were captured and executed at Balibo.
