Bali blast death toll rises to 174
Oct 13 2002
The death toll from the Bali nightclub blast is now 174, with at least 274
injured - including 16 Britons.
The national police chief describes the bombing as the worst act of terror
in Indonesia's history.
A second bomb exploded about 100 yards from the US consular office in
Denpasar, the capital of Bali.
There was no damage at the consular office and no casualties were
reported from the blast.
General Da'i Bachtiar said: "This is the worst act of terror in Indonesia's
history."
The first bomb destroyed the Sari Club, a popular nightspot frequented
by foreigners in the resort of Kuta Beach.
Briton Rob Hawkins said he was standing just 25-30ft away from the
blast when it rocked the nightclub in Kuta Beach.
He told Sky News he was saved because he was behind a concrete
pillar. His cousin suffered "terrible injuries".
"There was glass flying about. It was pitch dark," he said. "When I ran
out of the bar it was terrible."
Mr Hawkins said he saw one man with his leg blown off and saw women
and children screaming.
