Australian Academic Faces Show Trial In Indonesia

By Damien Kingsbury, Deakin University

The Indonesian Embassy's Trini G. Sualang (23/9) says that Lesley
McCulloch,
now in detention in Indonesia for two weeks on a visa charge, did not apply
for a "social-cultural" (research) visa, and hence sought to blame others for
her problem. On this, Mr Sualang is mistaken.

A social-cultural visa requires a sponsor in Indonesia. Dr McCulloch
approached her previous sponsor, the Centre for Strategic and International
Studies, which told her a social-cultural visa would not be made available to
her by the government. So while she did not submit a formal application, she
did
seek a research visa, and was refused.

Dr McCulloch and Joy-Lee Sadler's claims that they have been beaten and
threatened are supported by their lawyers' reports on the condition of the
pair.
They were also held incommunicado for six days, and have received little
medical
attention, inadequate food, and limited access to their lawyers.

Dr McCulloch's past writing on Aceh, based on research under an appropriate
visa, has angered the Indonesian Government, because it does not subscribe to
their questionable version of events in Aceh. That is what she is now being
punished for.

A number of senior Indonesian officials involved in this case have
announced
that they intend to see Dr McCulloch and Ms Sadler punished as as an example
to
others. The message is "don't come to Indonesia to try to investigate its
myriad problems". Dr McCulloch's and Ms Sadler's trial will not reflect even
Indonesia's elastic legal code, but a political decision. As such, it will be
a show trial.
