Indonesia plans a scheme to improve people's health

The life expectancy of Indonesians is among the lowest in Southeast Asia.

The director-general for public health development in Indonesia, Azrul Azwar
says the life expectancy of Indonesians is 65 years - compared with 76 for
people in Brunei, 77 in Singapore, 72 in Malaysia and Thailand, 69 in the
Philippines and 68 in Vietnam.

Mr Azwar says most Indonesians can not afford medical services.

He says the government has completed a bill on a national health guarantee
scheme, which would require each citizen to pay up to five or six percent of
their income as a premium.
