Nomex does not require any FR treatment because it is an inherently flame resistant material. Nomex garments will cost more initially. Cotton fabrics that are treated with flame retardant chemicals make them flame-resistant. Cotton Fabrics are not normally considered protective, but will become so after having the FR chemical treatment. The FR treatment applied to cotton and cotton blends, lasts for the “life of the garment. Ammonia Cure and Heat Cure Cotton or Cotton blend fabrics are made flame-resistant by application of a flame resistant treatment. This finish can be either a phosphonium salt precondensate polymerized with gaseous ammonia (THPOH-NH3), or a heat-cured dialkylphosphonamide. These processes bind the flame retardant to cotton fiber FR for durability. Either process has little effect on fabric hand and performance. Among fabrics produced by the “ammonia cure” process are AMTEX® by Mount Vernon Mills, Inc., Banwear® by ITEX, Inc. and INDURA® Ultra Soft® by Westex Inc. Life of the Garment There are several variables that contribute to the life of a garment. Some fabrics are inherently flame resistant, such as Nomex, and those that achieve flame resistance through special "FR treatments", such as Cotton or Cotton Blends. Bulwark laundry care instructions should be followed to ensure the full FR life of the garment, any improper laundering may shorten the FR life of the garment. Remember Nomex does not require any FR treatment, as it is an inherently flame resistant material. Nomex garments will cost more. As long as Bulwarks laundry instructions are followed, all Bulwark reusable garments are guaranteed to remain flame resistant for as long as you have a wearable garment. This means that you do not need to count the number of wearing or launderings to determine when a garment should be removed from service. Bulwark FR garments are removed from service on the same basis as non FR garments; because they are worn out, stained, torn, faded, or you just want new garments. As far as how long Bulwark garments actually lasts in service, this is very difficult to predict because of the many different work environments, the type of care & maintenance, the number of garments per wearer, and just how "hard" an individual is on his clothes. Generally, we see 100% cotton garments such as Excel-FR remain in service for about 12 - 18 months. Blended cotton/nylon fabric garments such as Excel-FR ComforTouch remain in service from about 24 - 30 months. Nomex and other synthetic fabrics can last 3 - 5 years. Cool Touch 2 garment life should be comparable to Nomex IIIA, meaning that wear life would be 3 - 5 years (36 -60 months). These are not performance guarantees or even averages, just observations of real world performance.
