A persistent cat has saved a New Zealand teenager's life. Simba raised
the alarm by throwing herself against the door of the burning garage
where Sam Shanahan was sleeping. A fire service spokesman said the
15-year-old was minutes from death. The New Zealand Herald reports Sam's
mum Leone is now going to treat Simba to a slap-up fish meal. She said
she was unaware of the fire at their home in Papakura until the cat
began charging into the door connecting the house to the garage. "He was
running up and down the hall crying, which he normally does for food,"
she said. "But he was hitting the door to the garage where Sam was
asleep and making a real racket. It was a bit strange so I went over,
opened the door and whoosh, smoke just poured everywhere." She woke Sam
up and they dragged a burning television outside, used a shoe to put out
the rest of the flames, then called the fire brigade. Fire Service
investigator George Stevens said: "This was a very, very close call.
Another couple of minutes and we would have been investigating a death."
The fire was caused by a candle left burning on top of the television.
