I would say the following you forgot some
- the problem with todays mobile communication
is that is too expensive in relation of the information
needs. The term " We will forward so much information that
we can´t pay for it" is realy a fact. -And todays mothers and dads are
seeing their
youngers "smoke phones" with other words its too expensive. If
there shall be an information socity it has to be FREE - or where
the users optimaly are paying a yearly membersship free to an own
created associtation, and where each member has a given function.

The biggest challenge would be to make an
internface to a pocket pc and in here all kinds of applications
that communicates. The just in time dilemma; How do we describe
information congnitive. For school work I see alot of needs -
and many good things since the teachers role is to descibe
information at the level the student is. Imagine the pocket
pc did this; and where the book became better and better since
they where modified all the time by the users.

I see with the display technology, developments It might
be so that books need some sort of a RF device in the back;
but to connect it it has not to be an struggle and naming
a "provider" it has to be there like the radio do play.

For mobile phones, people will obviously talk in them 8-)

Actually I think we are going to see different kinds of devices fitting
various needs:

Embedded: Simple communication devices designed for a specific use. The
typical examples are vending machines signaling when it should be refilled,
sensors of various kinds that monitor anything from temperature to cameras
providing real time video streams. Actuators are probably also interesting,
pulling down blinds, redirecring cars etc... The common denominator is that
these things are not designed for communications primarily. They do other
things and that they communicate is only a way to accomplish their task. The
device itself will probably not have a user interface.

Small communication: In my world this is a small device that you carry
everyday and that can be used without sitting down. If we look at what
happens today there are various small things that people tend to carry
around. The functions of things people typically carry are:

- Timekeeping both for telling time and more advanced calendar
functions

- Playing music and listening to radio stations

- phone calls and SMS

- handling money (valet).

- Books for reading

- Games of various kinds

That is what people have today. Then there are a number of things that you
sometimes carry

- Maps and location based services

- Cameras

I think the main challenge is that the device has to be small. It should fit
in the hand, period. Then you can cram as many functions into it as you may
whish and that people are prepared to pay for. The smallness dictates a
small screen and limited input capabilities. Some techniques to get around
this is to use voice or other means for input, e.g. gestures, handwriting
recognition etc. Then you can supplement the device with more specialized
user interfaces at specific locations e.g. larger screens and keyboards at
sales terminals and so on. But the main point is that the thing has to be
small.

Workplaces: Full featured working environments, designed for sitting down
and using. Here the user interface problems are probably more studied and
the limitations not as severe...

There is probably always a tradeoff of what goes where. For each application
there is probably a couple of measures, for example how much attention the
service needs, what kind of user interface size that makes it enjoyable etc,
etc. For each application there is probably a best match to a device...

/Olav
