DISABLEXHOST(1) DISABLEXHOST(1)

NAME
disableXhost - utility for disabling remote access to local display

SYNOPSIS
     /usr/lib/desktop/disableXhost

DESCRIPTION
The disableXhost utility is used to prevent remote hosts from placing
windows on or otherwise getting access to the local display during a
user's login session. All remote hosts will have display access
disabled, whether access originally was granted implicitly (ex., using
xhost +) or explicitly (ex., using xhost + hostname). Remote toolchests
will no longer be able to post windows on the local display; however,
remote iconviews (dirviews) will be able to continue displaying and
     spawning child iconviews.

This utility is invoked when the user selects System > Disable Remote
Display from the toolchest. It is not intended to be run directly by the
     end user.

In the IRIX Interactive Desktop (IID), there are four different ways to
     control display access:

     Permanent Methods:

	 1) Through the Improve System Security task in the System Manager

	 2) From the Desktop toolchest > Customize > Desktop, on
the Enable Remote Display toggle button

     Temporary Methods:

	 3) Indirectly from the Desktop toolchest, from Access Files then
As Another User or By Remote Login

	 4) From the System toolchest > Utilities > Enable Remote
	    Display or Disable Remote Display

Permanent settings are remembered and restored between login sessions.
Temporary settings override the permanent settings during the current
session, lasting only until the user logs out.

Method 1 lets you enable or disable display access for the whole system
for new users -- that is, users whose accounts are created through the
IRIX 6.3, 6.4, and 6.5 system administration User Manager after the
Improve System Security task is run. If users have their own xhost(1)
setting in their own customized dotfiles, then their settings there will
override the setting made in method 1.

Method 2 enables or disables display access immediately when you change
the Enable Remote Display toggle, but its effects last permanently,
across login sessions. Methods 3 and 4 can override this setting, but
the overriding effect lasts only during the current session.

Method 3 enables display access for a specific host whose toolchest or
dirview the user wants to view. The access is enabled automatically for
the specified host. This setting lasts only for the current session.

Method 4 enables or disables display access immediately and its effects
last temporarily, only during the current login session. It can override
settings made through any other method, but the overriding effect lasts
     only during the current session.

For more information about the entire IRIX Interactive Desktop
environment, see the IID(1) man page.

NOTES
There is an ambiguity in that the Desktop panel does not show the current
display access status but instead shows the user's default preference.
In 6.5, the user can be assured that they are disabling all remote access
either by unchecking the Desktop panel's Enable Remote Display toggle or
by selecting System > Disable Remote Display.
