MAKEWHATIS(8) BSD System Manager's Manual MAKEWHATIS(8)

NAME
makewhatis - build the whatis database

SYNOPSIS
     makewhatis [directory ...]

DESCRIPTION
The makewhatis command processes the directories listed on the command
line (or a built-in default if no command line arguments are passed) and
builds the /usr/share/man/whatis.db database from the man pages contained
     in them.

FILES
     /usr/share/man/makewhatis.perl the makewhatis work-horse
     /usr/share/man/whatis.db the whatis database

SEE ALSO
     whatis(1), apropos(1), whereis(1), man(1), man.conf(5),

BUGS
Doesn't use /etc/man.conf. Reads the formatted man pages so it is easily
     fooled.
