SETCONS(8) BSD System Manager's Manual SETCONS(8)

NAME
     setcons - set console parameters

SYNOPSIS
     setcons [-h] [-f device-file] [category [command]]

DESCRIPTION
Called without options, categories or commands, the setcons utility dis-
plays the current console parameters for the audible bell and keyboard
repeat. The addition of options, categories and commands allows certain
     console parameters to be set.

     The following options are available:

-f Specify an alternate console file. If no alternate console file
is specified, the file ``/dev/conskbd0'' is used.	If no alter-
nate console file is specified and the file ``/dev/conskbd0''
cannot be opened for any reason, the file ``/dev/console'' is
	     used.

-h Display help information for all categories.

The following categories, and commands within categories, are available:

bell Set the audible bell parameters.

	     audible
		     Enable the audible bell.

	     none Disable the audible bell.

	     freq value
Set the bell frequency to value hertz.

	     duration value
Set the bell duration to value milliseconds.

repeat Set the keyboard repeat parameters.

	     rate value
Set the keyboard rate to value characters per second,
where value is a floating point number between 2.0 and
		     30.0.

	     delay value
Set the keyboard delay to value seconds, where value is a
floating point number between 0.25 and 1.00.

keymap Set the console keyboard map.

reset reset to the compiled in default keyboard map table.

	     filename
set the keyboard map table with the contents of filename.

A variety of mappings are available to support different national
variants of PC style keyboards. After some syntax checks, the
table will be installed in the kernel as the new mapping between
	     keyboard scan codes and characters.

Usually, setcons is run during the system startup process from
     ``/etc/rc.configure''.

WARNING
You can easily make your keyboard unusable by installing wrong tables.
If this happens, the easiest way out is to login over the network and re-
set the keyboard (using the reset option).

The setcons utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs.

FILES
/dev/conskbd0 First choice for default console device.
/dev/console Second choice for default console device.
     /usr/libdata/keyboard
Default directory for keyboard mapping tables.
/etc/keyboard.map Copy of currently loaded keyboard mapping table. The
placement and update of this file is not automatic.
Scripts or configuration files which call setcons to
set the keyboard mapping tables should reference this
file or copy the new keyboard mapping table to it.
