The Mail Manager

Adding an alias file and map

Using an alias, you can specify a single name to represent a group of mail users. For example, you could use an alias ``sales'' that includes all the employees of the sales department. Everyone in the department will receive mail that has been addressed to ``sales''.

Alias files may be configured by entering their path name. If you wish you may also specify the kind of database which will be created for the alias file by preceding the path name with a ``class:'' prefix. For example:

   btree:/etc/mail/aliases
sendmail offers the following choices for the alias file database ``class'': implicit, hash, dbm, or btree. By default, if no class is specified, a database of class implicit will be created.

For more information see aliases(4).

An NIS alias map may be configured by entering a map name using the following syntax:

   nis:mail.aliases@nis_domain
The ``nis:'' specifies that this is an NIS map. nis_domain should be the name of the appropriate NIS domain. For more details about NIS, see ``NIS maps''.

To add an alias file or map, follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the category group ``Alias Files and Maps''.

  2. Click on Add.

This produces the ``Modify Alias File or NIS MAP'' screen.

  3. Enter a new name in the data entry field.

  4. Click on OK.

The new name is displayed on the screen and you are returned to the main screen.
