The Mail Manager

Specifying the host name

The Mail Manager interface displays the fully qualified host name being managed in the ``Host Name'' entry. The default host name displayed is the name determined by sendmail. In general it will not need to be modified, but you may do so if necessary. For example, if your machine has multiple network interfaces, and sendmail chooses the wrong name, then you may want to redefine this value. The MM automatically updates the j, m, and w macros in the sendmail.cf file with the correct values. For more details on sendmail.cf macros, see UNRESOLVED XREF-0.

A ``fully qualified domain name'' (also sometimes called a ``fully qualified host name'') includes both the machine name and the domain name of a host. For example, consider a fully qualified host name mymachine.dev.footle.com where mymachine is the name of your machine, and dev.footle.com describes the domain. The dot is the domain separator. For more information, see ``DNS domain names and host names''.

To modify the host name:

  1. Select the ``Host Name'' entry.

  2. Either click on the main screen Modify button or select the Edit -> Modify menu option. Alternatively, you may double click on the ``Host Name'' entry.

A pop-up screen prompts for a host name, with a data entry field and a Select button.

  3. Either enter the host name directly into the field, or click on the Select button to produce a pop-up screen titled ``Select Host'' which enables you to browse a list of hosts.

The ``Select Host'' screen gives you the choice of sorting the scrollable index of host names by name or by IP address and a filename filter. There is a help message associated with the position of the mouse.

  4. Once the correct host name appears in the ``Selection:'' field, click on OK to confirm your change and return to the ``Modify'' pop-up.

  5. Click on OK to return to the main screen, which displays the new host name.
