Configuring and using NetBIOS

Configuring and using NetBIOS

The NetBIOS interface enables applications, such as the Advanced File and Print Server (AFPS), to send and receive messages over TCP/IP. NetBIOS implements a simple name service that provides a name mapping to IP addresses. Applications that use NetBIOS need not know the IP address of a particular machine when sending of receiving data. Instead, they use a NetBIOS name that is translated to an IP address by the NetBIOS software.

NetBIOS is primarily used on networks that need to support PCs that are running Windows/NT. The NetBIOS software provides a name service that can be used by file and print services such as AFPS (Advanced file and print services).
