Networking

This topic covers the many and varied networking facilities provided by UnixWare 7. For an introduction to networking concepts and basic networking commands, see Understanding networking.

The topic areas covered include:

Configuration of network hardware and network protocols such as:
- Ethernet and Token-Ring adapters for setting up a local-area network (LAN).
- ISDN adapters, modems, and PPP for setting up a wide-area network (WAN).
- The TCP/IP network protocol suite which is needed for Internet services.
- The NetBIOS interface to TCP/IP.
Configuration of TCP/IP and Internet services such as:
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers which can provide configuration parameters to network clients.
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers on which network clients can upload and download files.
- Domain Name System (DNS) servers which network clients can use to resolve domain names to IP addresses.
- Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers which can be used to synchronize the clocks of all the systems on a network.
Configuration of other network services such as:
- UNRESOLVED XREF-0 Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) which provides TCP/IP-based directory services.
- Network File System (NFS) which allows computers on a network to mount and access remote filesystems as though they were local.
- Network Information Service (NIS) which centralizes and simplifies the management of files which are in common use by several systems.
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) which allows remote monitoring and control of networked systems.
