polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
Do you really mean it | |
Yes I do. Please, do not send mails with this kind of question. It is true that the pricing is not usual, but it is quite easy to calculate to everybody how much it costs. The value does not matter. Never compare with $US or other valuta. BUT you have to send it as low or high value is it. No exceptions.
faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
how much it costs | |
it costs 10 local currency units per username (per host) but at least 2 USD value that should be sent to polarhome.com with the correctly filled application form. You have to use application form or write all text, requited data and disclamer on some blank paper. Application must be signed (by hand) personally. you have to pay this amount only once (when you upgrade your ftp account to shell one).
just regular, registered ftp account can be upgraded to shell account
shell account is activated after received application form (usually 3-6) days.
user will be notified by e-mail. every malicious activity will result as fallback to ftp account level or total removal, but if your account has not been denied, you can apply again for shell account by sending the appilcation form/paying the fee/etc... Please note if user has more than one account, all accounts will be removed. On polarhome does not exist hack and clean accounts, just normal user accounts that can be lost. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
What is it mean "10 local currency units" | |
polarhome.com is used by users all around the World and fixed price in one currency could put quite lot of users in negative position, because for ex: $10 does not have same value for US citizens and for Brazilians or Romanians. In some countries people work whole month or even more for $10.
Therefore, everybody should pay 10 units of their own main local currency as:
10 USD for USA | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
What if does not exist 10 unit bank note | |
For these countries admission fee will be the lowest paper bank note, but at least the post stamp value on the envelope (per username, per hostname).
faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
Why this constraint with "at least 2 USD value" | |
Some countries as Romania and Slovenia has a very low excange rate to other converible valutas, therefore users could appreciate to achieve shell accounts for 2000 Lei when the stamp costs 15000 Lei. Some of the users abused this behaviour by registering hundreds of accounts and later on used for remote attacks without responsibility.
faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
Do I have to change addmission fee to USD | |
No, no way. You have to send your local currency as it is. BUT it have to be a valid currency in your country, not some old depricated etc banknotes. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
How can I pay? Where should I send | |
Payment methods are described in application form ( http://www.polarhome.com/service/application.html ). NOTE: do not send application form without payment nor payment without application form. Both are required. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
Can I register more than one username | |
Sure you can, if you need them. You can even write them all on one single application form, or put few application forms to one envelope. BUT if you abuse one of the accounts, you will loose all of them. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
I do not have a printer. What should I do | |
You can write by hand all required information on a blank paper. Actually the hardcopy information holder is less important than the information itself. It would be accepted even a bottle of wine if you succeed to write required data on it. :-)
faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
Do I need to give my real name and address | |
Our policy requires real name, but obviously we can not check some user's real identity in another part of the world. Registration is based on honour and trust. However application form, e-mail address and other users information handles confidentially (as we have done so far) However on official legal request polarhome will provide all available information. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
How much is 2 USD in my currency | |
polarhome will use The XE.com Universal Currency Converter as a reference.
faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
how I know that my application arrived | |
As soon your application arrived you will be notified by e-mail.
E-mail contains welcome message for aproved shell upgrade or some comments why your application has not been aproved. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : shell upgrade questions :
May I move my account from one host to another | |
Unfortunately not. It would be no problem if it would be an unique request, but every time when some new system is introduced, half of the users from old system want to move over... and it is almost impossible from administartion point of view. faq | |

polarhome's initial policy | |
This is an absolutely free and open system - open for everybody.
There are just 3 rules:
-Have full respect to other users (they want to feel themselves free as well)

polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : policy changes log :
policy change 2001.10.10 | |
polarhome.com learned from earlier experience and from 2001.10.10 changed its user policy in order to improve service quality and stop malicious activity from member servers. Accounts are split between ftp and shell access.
------------------------------------------------ Minutes from decision maker:October 3rd, 2001 polarhome.com came to a dead-end of free shell providing
activity. The whole system was a disaster, even with raising popularity.
Therefore, system administrator gave a proposal to close polarhome.com in
his declaration.

polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : policy changes log :
policy change 2002.03.07 | |
>From 2002.05.07. is valid the updated policy. 1. ftp/mail account are free as they were. 2. set up fee for shell account is 10 local currency but at least 2 USD value. 3. you can upgrade your account just personally - (seems it was not clear until now) 4. you do not have to use application form, but have to write down the whole text on some paper with all disclaimer etc. 5. application should be signed by hand 6. polarhome will accept old policy registrations during this week until Monday, 13th of May, 2002. Explanation: - Some countries as Romania and Slovenia that has a much lower currency rate than other countries abused old policy by registering hundreds of account and use them without any respect. Higher registration fee should stop these users. - Some users registered other user accounts to earn on polarhome. But how is possible to earn on polarhome... it means that it will not be upgrades, no hardware etc and polarhome will just die. I do not need your registration fees... I have enough for myself and whole polarhome income so far, would not be enough to pay my real time fee for one single day. But all we are working and giving it to community, and I expect from community to understand it: - it means no arrogant requests - positive approach - help in problem solving - tolerance in delays - tolerance in service quality I want to make it clear that polarhome is not an commercial site. We do not have advertising nor official sponsors... it is JUST community sponsored and driven. To be honest, polarhome does not need lot of users, does not need more publicity... it needs better quality and workspace for existing community. Thanks for co-operation. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : polarhome policy : policy changes log :
policy change 2005.08.01 | |
>From 2005.08.01 polarhome has new user policy. ftp accounts are (will be) revoked and just template and shell accounts exist. This policy modification was needed in order to protect polarhome from users that use their ftp accounts for phishing, spoofing, distributes warez, running pirate forums and other malicious activity. ftp users can continue to use polarhome until 2005.10.31. After that date ftp access will be denied. Polarhome for last five years has offered shell, ftp, mail and other online public services. Unfortunately, there have been always some user that abused these services.... and as time passed we have been forced to introduce different security measures in order to keep services running. If you read through http://www.polarhome.com/news.php and http://www.polarhome.com/service/decision.html you can follow up how an absolutely open, free shell site - "gateway to freedom" - becomes a gateway to prison. A place full of fear from closed lines by ISP, abuse mails, "site not available" messages etc. Problems are caused by individuals. Individuals, malicious by hart or just ignorant that jeopardize existence of whole community. The worst is that we can not do much more than close our doors, restrict rights etc, in order to have as less possible services that could be abused. We need to be blind not to see the parallel with the real world. Unfortunately, more police officers, ID checks and cameras will not help to save the tube passengers. There can be always an individual who will be able to damage, even the most efficiently shielded public service. This is valid to virtual, online World, as well. Public services are for ideal World where everybody follows at least one rule "Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you." For such idea to work The World needs more trust, dialog, love and understanding of each other needs. Is it possible to realize such idea in such imperfect World with lot of different interests? No, it is not... and it is written: "It will be just worse". One does not have to be a prophet to see that we are every second closer to Armageddon - and we just sit here and simply can not do anything against. There is nobody to protect us, to lead us to the right side. I can almost hear your angry voice - but there is God. He will show us the right way. Yes, probably he does show the path - unfortunately most of us do not listen to God. Most of us prefer to listen to humans that translate God's words. That causes troubles. Most of us mostly do what they are said to do, because it is too hard to learn and have enough courage and competence to make a decision alone. We became marionettes of our own neighbourhood. I do believe in free will and in possibility to change this bloody existentialistic destiny. We can not change the World, but we can make, at least, ourselves better. Polarhome community will be much smaller but closer and trust worth. What will happen now? What are the implications of new policy? 1. introduced a template account - this account is a full featured account but without ftp, ssh, shell etc access. Just e-mail access is allowed. 2. earlier ftp accounts will exist until 2005.10.31 3. 1st of November ftp accounts will be converted to template accounts and web pages will be archived and removed from web space 4. from 1st of November just "hard copy" registered users will be able to access polarhome services and change content of web space etc. 5. because we raised the "trust level" PHP safe_mode will be turned OFF and functions: mail() fsockopen() pfsockopen() stream_socket_client() will be allowed In short: current ftp users have three choices: 1. register a shell 2. leave as it is and after three months use just e-mail 3. stop using polarhome services The updated policy could be finding at http://www.polarhome.com/service/policy.html Please note, there are much better free e-mail providers as gmail, yahoo, hotmail, msn etc. They are reliable - polarhome is not. Therefore, if you need just e-mail service, it is recommended to use some huge respectful company instead. polarhome.com is non commercial, educative effort for popularization of shell enabled operating systems and Internet services, offering shell accounts, mail and other online services on all available systems... and polarhome is not afraid to take hard steps in order to fulfil this task. polarhome.com FAQ : access questions :
What does it mean "direct access ports" | |
Most of the servers are port forwarded as it is described in http://www.polarhome.com/service/shell/ports.html ... it means that they are behind the gateway server, particulary gate.polarhome.com. To achieve equal port distribution on each server, polarhome uses "open direct access port ranges" that allows direct access from the internet to servers. From servers are no limitations. Typical example: You run an eggdropp process on redhat box. To be able to access/manage your eggdrop from the Internet, you have to choose one free port in given range (for redhat server 5000-9999). If you would decide to use some other port that is not in the direct access range. Your bot will work correctly, but you will not be able to manage from the Internet - just from servers inside of polarhome.com realm. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : access questions :
LOST PASSWORD? | |
If you feel that you lost your account password, please check:
1. test your current password with the Webmail interface. It bypass all portforwarding related issues. 2. check if you use correct host, port and protocol to access polarhome hosts http://www.polarhome.com/service/ports.html 3. check if you have access rights for that protocol that you want to use. Please note that telnet and SSH needs shell access: http://www.polarhome.com/service/policy.html 4. MySQL passwords are not same as ftp/telnet access passwords. They are autogenerated and sent by mail to username@host.polarhome.com where username is your username and host is one of polarhome hosts as redhat, solaris, aix etc. You can read this mail with POP3, IMAP or through web interface by using your username and (ftp/telnet) password. 5. polarhome.com does not send any password nor welcome letter to given e-mail address during ftp/shell account registartion. You should use password that you have choosen. Usually it takes about 5-8 minutes to create a new account. If you do everything as it should, but it still does not work: then please send your request to support@polarhome.com. Please quote you username and hostname as well. Please note, that support can and will change password just if you use registered e-mail address (shown by finger) faq | |

polarhome.com FAQ : database problems :
do I have a database by default | |
no, database accounts have nothing to do with ftp or shell accounts, however if you created your ftp account after 2002.05.14 MySQL accounts can be generated by the system (if requested) and account details will be posted to your polarhome e-mail address. On request you will get the same username for easier administration. ask MySQL account at mysql@polarhome.com and PostgreSQL accounts at postgres@polarhome.com
please include your username and hostname.

polarhome.com FAQ : database problems :
what is my hostname | |
by default your MySQL host is localhost. polarhome on servers that support MySQL create MySQL accounts, but for security reason just hostname=localhost can connect to that account. You can manage your database account with web interface ( http://www.polarhome.com/service/database/ ) or request from mysql@polarhome.com to enable your host or every host to connect to MySQL server. Please note: - always quote your username and hostname in any correspondence with support - if you want to have same password for localhost access and for world access, please provide your MySQL account password as well with the request. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : database problems :
are databases reachable from every host? | |
polarhome MySQL databases are created with default values:
username: users username
database: users username
hosts: localhost
password : randomly created password that is not equal with user chosen ftp/shell password. It means that user can access its database just from the localhost - running on that particular box. Therefore mysql TCP port is not defined on most boxes and MySQL uses just socket communictaion - that implies that these databases are not reachable from any other machine. faq | |
polarhome.com FAQ : database problems :
how can I access my database outside from polarhome realm | |
Unfortunately it is not possible, because mysql port is not portforwarded.
Read more about at http://www.polarhome.com/service/ports.html Also on some hosts tcp listener is off - just the socket works. And also the accounts are created just for host: localhost faq | |
