A MARINE sergeant (MetroTV: dari YONIF I) and three separatist rebels were
killed in the latest violence in Indonesia's tsunami-battered Aceh province,
the military said today.

The marine and the rebels were killed in a gunfight in the Seunuddon area in
North Aceh district yesterday, said local military spokesman Lieutenant
Colonel Eddi Sulistiadie.

Another soldier (MetroTV: dari YONIF IV) was wounded, he said.

Rebel spokesmen could not be reached for comment.

More than 12,000 people have been killed in the resource-rich province since
the Free Aceh Movement launched its campaign for independence in 1976.

The conflict intensified in May 2003 when a truce collapsed and Aceh was put
under temporary martial law.
But the December tsunami, which killed more than 128,000 people in Aceh,
prompted Jakarta and the rebels to reopen a dialogue.

Representatives of the two camps have met three times in Finland since the
tsunami and agreed to meet again this month.
