There were no casualties.
BAGHDAD -- The U.S. command announced on Thursday the deaths of 14
more American troops, most killed by powerful roadside bombs in Baghdad.
Also on Thursday, thick black smoke rose from the heavily fortified Green
Zone
after a mortar or rocket barrage, as militants struck back despite a massive
military offensive.
The latest U.S. deaths raised to at least 3,545 the number of American
troops who have died since the war began in March 2003, according to an
Associated Press count.
The deadliest attack was a roadside bomb that struck a convoy in
northeastern Baghdad on Thursday, killing five U.S. soldiers, three Iraqi
civilians and an Iraqi interpreter, the military said. Several hours later,
a rocket-propelled grenade struck a vehicle in northern Baghdad, killing one
soldier.
The military reported that another powerful roadside bomb killed four U.S.
soldiers in western Baghdad, and that two Marines died in fighting in Anbar
province, to the west of the capital. Southwest of Baghdad, two soldiers
were killed Tuesday when explosions struck near their vehicle.
The Pentagon has sought to seize the momentum against al Qaeda and other
militants with the arrival in Iraq of 30,000 additional troops. It has
launched several large-scale operations.
But the military has also faced a series of recent attacks on U.S. forces
that are more vulnerable as they increasingly take to the streets and remote
outposts.
Green Zone
Nearly a dozen mortars or rockets exploded inside the fortified Green Zone
at about 10 a.m. Thursday, in what's become a near-daily demonstration of
the limitations of the U.S.-led security crackdown and the militants'
resolve to rain terror on even the most protected area of Baghdad.
Scores of civilians and military personnel scurried for cover inside
concrete bunkers stationed near checkpoints. There were no casualties.
The Green Zone is home to Iraqi government offices and the U.S. and British
embassies. About 1,000 State Department staff members work and live there.
