Gold Newsletter's Brien Lundin Touts Project Generators
The business model now commonly referred to as "prospect generation" is
a recognition that it takes not only skill and hard work, but a lot of
luck to make a big mineral discovery. So it helps to put the numbers in
your favor as much as possible -- to have a lot of tickets in the
lottery, so to speak. So prospect generators run a lot of properties
through the mill. They look at a lot, winnow that down to a manageable
number that they can appropriately analyze, and then joint-venture those
out to another company to do the more-costly work of drilling and,
hopefully, resource definition. Then they do it again. And again.
Because if you're both good and lucky, you might have to drill 100
properties to find one that ends up being a meaningful mine. So you'd
better have someone else pay for the drilling, because you'll never be
able to fund it all. Typically, a prospect generator will retain a 20%
to 30% interest in the project, with the joint venture partner paying
all costs through to a bankable feasibility study. The logic here is
that 30% of a major mine is still a huge winner for a junior company.
I'm a big proponent of the prospect generator business model, but I'm
not a purist on it. The key is good management, because some operators
don't use this model so much to increase the odds of success, but to
guarantee their employment over the long term. 3 prospect generators I
like (see below) are Millrock Resources (TSX.V: MRO), Almaden Resources
(TSX: AMM, Amex: AAU), and Tarsis Resources (TSX.V: TCC). They each have
proven management teams and solid business strategies. Additionally, I
believe that companies should be willing to ease up on this strategy if
a prospect seems worthy of keeping in the fold. Two former die-hard
joint venturers -- Almaden and Kaminak Gold -- decided to break ranks
and drill particularly exciting properties, and scored big hits as a
result.

Millrock Resources Inc.
(TSX.V: MRO)
Millrock is a prospect generator with a tremendous portfolio of early
stage projects and a veritable who's who list of resource company joint
venture partners. Their land packages include large positions in both
Alaska and Arizona, allowing for year round work and news flow. Their
model keeps them roughly cash flow neutral eliminating the need for
additional financing and dilution.
Almaden Minerals Ltd.
(TSX: AMM, Amex: AAU)
Almaden continues to impress us at RSD with the way they create and
develop mineral projects with their strong technical team. Their
self-drilled, fully owned Ixtaca Project continues to return mineralized
drill intercepts and is looking more and more like it has the potential
to be a significant gold-silver resource. In 2012 Almaden also plans to
drill its wholly owned El Cobre copper-gold porphyry project as well as
advancing other projects both wholly owned and in partnerships.
Tarsis Resources Ltd.
(TSX.V: TCC)
Tarsis is one of RSD's favorite prospect generators with projects in
both the Yukon and Mexico. The latitude disparity allows for year round
work and news flow. Early mineralized samples and assay indications hold
a lot of promise for resource discoveries. We are looking for 2012 to be
a pivotal year that expands on their successful grass root efforts thus
far.
